We provide support with an eye toward building confidence and independence.

SHC staff and volunteers are available year round to respond to questions about day-to-day life and help families connect to or navigate community systems and resources.  Mentoring helps these families and individuals develop the skills and confidence to ultimately advocate for themselves.

For example, SHC teaches family members to:
Become a Mentor
  • Make medical appointments and access specialists, including low cost dental care.
  • Connect to vocational training and college career counseling.
  • Use U.S. specific job search strategies to search for and apply for a job.
  • Understand the process to apply for and appeal social benefits.
  • Prepare for the knowledge portion of the driver's test before getting a driving license.
  • Locate and enroll in a local food bank.
  • Gather documents and register for early childhood programs and elementary school.
  • Enlist pro-bono and other legal assistance for green card applications and other legal matters.
