Our mission is to engage with refugees to build a better community.
We envision a world where our communities are pathways to empowerment and thriving futures.
Solutions in Hometown Connections recognizes that most refugees resettling in the U.S. must overcome tremendous language, cultural and economic challenges in short order. Resettlement agencies provide refugees with social, medical and employment services for 90 days from the date of their U.S. arrival. Families need support well beyond the 90 day timeframe as they begin a life vastly different from the one they left behind. SHConnections provides this critical continuing support.
Many families lack a proficient English speaker among them, making every day interactions with everyone from the dentist to a grocery store cashier confusing and frustrating. Other families experience post-traumatic stress from having lived in a war zone or prolonged stay in a refugee camp. Most families experience sadness over the loss of country, community, home, and extended family. Even refugees who are educated, speak English and are skilled workers struggle to reach independence within the 90 day timeframe.
SHConnections connects volunteers in our community with resettled refugees to provide much needed continuing support in three key program areas: Cultural Orientation, English Tutoring, and Job Coaching & Mentoring.
