"Word soon spread that if you had time to spare and an open heart, you could make a difference in the life of a displaced family."
Our story begins in early 2017, when we saw that refugee families being resettled in the Washington DC metro area were struggling to find their footing. These families, coming to the United States with not much more than a few suitcases and a limited grasp of English, needed help navigating their bewildering new home.
To assist families with this difficult transition we began to coordinate volunteers to tutor and mentor recently arrived refugee families. Word soon spread that if you had time to spare and an open heart, you could make a difference in the life of a displaced family. Our volunteers were inspired by the leadership of SHC Founder Merritt Groeschel, who through her involvement in the sponsorship of a Syrian refugee family in 2016, came to appreciate the difference a community can make together.
Solutions in Hometown Connections was established the same year to provide durable programs and solutions to refugee and immigrant families–especially the wives, mothers and daughters who are not accessing English programs, or the workforce, as easily as the men in their families. Through SHC, families receive English language instruction and educational programs, learn to navigate services, and get connected to a warm and inclusive community.
