The SHC tutor is the friendly face who knocks on the door for the weekly English lesson.

Volunteer as a Tutor
For refugees and other people who are new to the United States one of the greatest challenges is meeting and getting to know native English speakers. SHC understands this. Its greatest resources is the network of volunteers that provide in-home English language tutoring. The SHC tutor is the familiar and trusted face who comes by every week to converse in English and help our students to develop comfort with everyday English vocabulary.  In-home tutoring is the first step toward lessening the isolation that a newcomer may experience upon arriving in the U.S. In some instances, a tutor becomes a trusted family advocate. A tutor may also help SHC identify situations where families could benefit from increased support, or referral to appropriate community resources.

In-home tutors are equipped with ongoing support, training opportunities, and tips and tools.

Most SHC in-home tutors have no prior experience teaching English but are strongly motivated by a desire to welcome newcomers to our community and help them thrive. Once the tutoring begins volunteers have continuing enrichment opportunities including:

  • Weekly tutor meetings
  • Monthly tutor trainings
  • Regular email updates with tutoring tips, tools and techniques
  • SHC field trips, events and celebrations
  • All SHC programs, including 'in home' tutoring are currently conducted online.
  • SHC provides training, troubleshooting and support for content based questions and technology challenges.
