As part of the SHC English learning program, SHC hosts welcome workshops in libraries and community spaces in neighborhoods local to many of their students. Workshops allow participants to practice English and introduce families to American culture, holidays, and programs and services in our communities. SHC also holds these workshops on their mobile classroom on Mondays and Wednesdays at specific locations and times.

Click HERE to access the MCAEL Program Directory and search through a list of adult English language classes available in Montgomery County right now. You can search for adult ESOL programs in the directory by location, time, level, cost, and whether childcare or transportation is offered.
Look on the class list to see the program that best suits you and contact the organization or follow the link for registration. If you need further assistance, you can contact any of the MCAEL staff. Keep in mind, each organization that has a program is unique and may have their own requirements.

Community Outreach of Montgomery County provides a Language Outreach Program which offers a unique, family-centered approach to language skills development for Montgomery County residents who are non-English speakers struggling with language and cultural barriers. Language Outreach also offers citizenship classes and assistance with citizenship applications.

SHC's unique multi-generational English program is thoughtfully designed to cater to mothers who face cultural obstacles, have limited literacy or no formal education, struggle to connect to traditional ways of learning English, childcare constraints, and transportation difficulties. Classes are taught by highly trained professional ESL teachers and meet for three 10-week sessions throughout the school year with a shortened 4-week summer session. Children are welcome! They can learn along side their parent or learn with the other children and the SHC childcare professional.

The Maryland Office for Refugees and Asylees offers free English Language Training (ELT) to refugees in Montgomery and Prince George's County, and in the Baltimore Metropolitan Area.

The Adult Education and Literacy Services Division provides assistance to Maryland Department of Labor funded adult education programs to offer English language instruction for adults. Instructors funded through the Maryland Department of Labor are trained to help learners develop the skills necessary to advance toward personal goals that may create a pathway to vocational or educational attainment.

USAHello offers a free online classroom with citizenship and GED prep classes!
To sign up for their GED & citizenship classes they ask for you to create an account and list your email address and a password. No other personal information is required! This is offered to refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers with all backgrounds and immigration statuses.

SHC English Tutoring program matches tutor volunteers with SHC English class students to provide additional practice opportunities. SHC provides training, enrichment, and support for tutor volunteers as well.
Citizenship Preparation
SHC's Citizenship Preparation program prepares students for the Naturalization interview with confidence and competence. The SHC curriculum offers three class levels: Pre-Citizenship for students who are still gaining the English skills and knowledge needed to join civics-based instruction. Beginning Citizenship introduces essential vocabulary and concepts, while Citizenship Preparation takes participants through every aspect of the interview process, ensuring they are fully equipped for success.
