Zainora shares her story
My name is Zainora. I am a sophomore studying International Studies/Political Science at Northern Virginia Community College. My family and I immigrated to the US about three years ago from Afghanistan.
When I stepped on US soil, my English was at a level that I could barely introduce myself. I had finished high school back in my country. My goal here was to start college. I had dream of finishing my education but had no idea from where to start in the US because I was new here. Also, I came from a war zone. I did not know anyone, friends or family, in the US to help me with my school. I did not know the school system here also the language. I was confused and disappointed upon arrival in the US. I wanted to go to school but didn’t know how.
After a while, I met some angels in the face of humans who helped me to learn the language and get into college. They are the amazing people of the SHC organization. I learned a lot from them. They patiently went step by step with me, helped me to gain my goals. They help me to stand on my own feet. I would love to thank each one of them. They are truly wonderful humans! I wouldn’t be where I am right now without their help, so thanks SHC!
