Empowering Lives Since 2017
Since 2017, Solutions in Hometown Connections (SHC) has been dedicated to providing programs and solutions tailored for refugee and immigrant families. Our focus shines brightly on vulnerable and isolated individuals, especially mothers with small children who often experience additional barriers to accessing programs and workforce opportunities that can lead to lonlieness and depression. Through SHC's comprehensive offerings, families are enveloped in an inclusive community, fostering growth and integration.
Through our Community Connections Program, SHC bridges families to crucial services and programs within our local communities. With clear and accessible information and personalized support and follow up, we empower families to take full advantage of the resources available to them, and we make sure that connections are made when and where they are needed.
Community Connections & Events
Multi-gen English Classes & Tutoring
Navigating language and cultural challenges, especially for mothers with small children, is at the core of our family-friendly approach. SHC's unique multi-generational English programs are thoughtfully designed to cater to vulnerable individuals facing cultural obstacles, limited literacy, childcare constraints, and transportation difficulties. We understand the nuances and craft our programs to facilitate effective learning.
Early Childhood Education
Our Early Childhood Education Program for young children aged 2-5, promotes Kindergarten readiness for children from families where English is not the primary language. SHC PreSHCool meets both in-person and online, creating a nurturing space where children learn and grow alongside their mothers, fostering a supportive environment for educational exploration.
Citizenship Preparation
SHC's Citizenship Program is unique and consists of multiple parts.
SHC Citizenship classes prepare students for the Naturalization interview, teaching the civics content and English comprehension.
SHC students are invited to participate in Citizenship field trips every class session to see first hand how civic engagement and our democracy operate.
Citizenship tutoring mimics the structure of the naturalization interview allowing our students ample practice and additional one on one time with an SHC Tutor.
SHC works with legal provider partners to connect our students with legal assistance in completing immigration applications or for representation when needed.
Many SHC students face barriers to integrating into their new communities including literacy, English fluency, childcare, transportation and social adjustment. The SHC Community Connections program helps address these issues to make sure our students have to resources they need to be thriving members of our community.
Welcome Workshops
Welcome Workshops are a multi-generational program designed to warmly welcome moms and their preschool-aged children to our communities. Adult students practice English and learn about important resources and cultural norms in the U.S., while their children engage in play-based learning. These workshops are designed to help new English speakers gain confidence and become more independent in the US by using English and other resources to navigate daily life.
English Language Learning (ELL) Classes
The SHC English Language Learner Program’s (ELLP) mission is to equip students with language skills, practical information and the confidence they need to be fully engaged, participating members of their communities. The focus of our program is to engage students who are traditionally isolated and difficult to reach - those with lower levels of education and literacy, limited familiarity with/access to technology, and/or an inability to access the traditional ESL system due to lack of transportation or young children at home.
