English Classes for Everyone!
Navigating language and cultural challenges, especially for mothers, is at the core of our family-friendly approach. SHC's unique multi-generational English program is thoughtfully designed to cater to those who face cultural obstacles, limited literacy, childcare constraints, and transportation difficulties. We understand the nuances and craft our programs to facilitate effective learning.
What We Offer
-
As part of the SHC English learning program, SHC hosts welcome workshops in libraries and community spaces in local neighborhoods where families live. Workshops allow participants to practice English and introduce families to American culture, holidays, and programs and services in our communities. Coming soon is the SHC Bus-- a mobile classroom unit that will enable SHC to host Welcome Workshops in any community.
-
This program focuses on mothers who face cultural obstacles, have limited literacy or no formal education and struggle to connect to traditional ways of learning English. Classes are taught by highly trained professional ESL teachers and meet for three 10-week sessions throughout the school year with a shortened 4-week summer session. (~300 students enrolled in Spring 2023).
-
SHC English Tutoring program matches tutor volunteers with SHC English class students to provide additional practice opportunities. SHC provides training, enrichment, and support for tutor volunteers. (40 current active one on one tutors)
-
SHC’s What’s Next class is for students with intermediate to advanced English skills who want to learn how to find employment or educational opportunities in the area. The goal of this course is to provide students with resources and information to bridge gaps and connect to existing programs or opportunities in our community with the expertise and support of an SHC volunteer coach. The instructor-led course focuses on goal setting, and related foundational skills. Goals do not need to be employment focused but they certainly can be– this class is for anyone who wants support to be able to fully engage in their new community! (current Spring Session enrollment 6 students, 5 current active volunteer coaches)
