Community Connections & Events
This program is designed to connect families to services and programs in the community by bridging obstacles to their access. SHC provides reliable, easy to understand information about resources and services available in each county. Simply providing information about resources may not ensure that families coming from low literacy backgrounds, suffering from trauma, or overwhelmed with the pace of adjusting to a new culture are able to access programs designed for their families. The SHC Community Connections program staff and volunteers use multiple ways to connect to families and communicate information to groups and one on one when needed.
What We Offer
-
With all of our programs, SHC seeks to bridge gaps that exist in services and to help families to connect to existing services and resources that they may not know about or may not know how to access. SHC also seeks to help raise knowledge of what is available so newcomers can become self-reliant.
SHC staff refers newcomers to state and county organizations and other nonprofit groups that provide English Language Learning, workforce training and employment assistance, immigration/legal assistance, childcare and extracurricular opportunities for school-age children, emergency food and medical assistance, and other needs identified in the community.
SHC convenes regular workshops for newcomers on topics such as financial literacy, mental health resources, and career development
-
SHC sends out a weekly newsletter for newcomers with information about events and resources, such as job fairs, free or reduced-cost enrichment programs for children, and state or county assistance programs.
